could effectively replace the endogenous lipids of other biological membranes. Sarcoplasmic reticulum is unusual in having a highly specialized function requiring only a simple membrane protein composition. In other biological membranes, where there are large numbers of different membrane proteins, lipid heterogeneity may serve at least in part to satisfy their widely different lipid requirements.
